Semi-Secluded Park Bench, Monday afternoon

Marc couldn't be in the apartment, was the thing.
He didn't want to be anywhere. Marc Spector had solid method to his coping mechanisms and they all boiled down to one concept: just don't. Don't be there. Don't deal.
Only running away wasn't an option because Marc had to consider Steven. And handing the body over to Steven was definitely not an option because as bad as this week was for Marc for Steven it was going to be a thousand times worse.
No prize for guessing if that was Marc's fault, of course.
The Steven of it all was why the apartment was a no go. Too much there that was Steven, too much that was personal. Marc was trying not to deal with memories, thank you, he didn't need help with the reminders.
So he went somewhere that meant nothing to him, which was a quiet bench in the park. And he went there with his last option for coping mechanisms, which was currently contained in a paper bag wrapped bottle at his side.
Maybe if he was lucky he and Steven wouldn't wake up until Sunday.

Date: 2022-10-03 07:56 pm (UTC)Wanda already did not do well on her own. To be left behind knowing half the universe was gone too? It would have been bad.
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-03 08:00 pm (UTC)"Total shitshow," Marc said, agreeing with her. He shrugged philosophically. "Not that I remember a lot of it."
He'd had more than his usual number of blackouts in those five years. Probably not surprising considering how screwed everything was.
Then, in that whisper that only drunk people thought was a whisper, he said, "Don't tell Steven."
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-03 08:26 pm (UTC)Especially considering she barely had idea of what was going on here.
“I’m gonna guess you don’t want to talk about it,” Wanda said, gesturing to the bottle. “But speaking from experience, having that much pain swirling around in your head…well, trying to handle it alone doesn’t usually lead to good things.”
Chalk that up to advice she should also be giving herself right now.
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-03 08:29 pm (UTC)To let Wanda know he didn't mean her he tapped the side of his head, sloppily mirroring the gesture she'd made moments ago.
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-03 10:48 pm (UTC)Was that rude to ask?
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-03 11:40 pm (UTC)"Asleep," Marc told her. Which was as easy a shortcut way of explaining how this worked as anything. "He can't hear us. Probably be mad about that too. He thinks you're great."
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 12:29 am (UTC)She hoped he didn't do a deep dive of her history one day. The illusion would be shattered.
"You have some impressive mental blocks up there, because I couldn't tell," Wanda said. Then, slowly, "Of course, it was kind of hard to focus on anything with the...whole pain thing going on."
She waved her hand vaguely. "I'm sorry, it's not my business, it was just...very intense. Kind of had me worried."
It was okay when she treated a constant, crushing sadness like it was normal, but apparently when someone else felt like that she got to be worried. Wanda never denied being a bit of a hypocrite.
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 12:35 am (UTC)"You learn to live with it," Marc said, having no idea he was talking to somebody with her own constant background of pain. He held up the bottle. "This helps. Did you want some?"
Marc didn't normally have manners but yanno, he had nothing against Wanda. Wasn't as much of a fanboy as Steven was but as far as he was concerned he didn't hate her. From him that was practically a glowing endorsement.
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 12:56 am (UTC)In the unlikely event she'd be able to keep straight liquor down, nobody wanted Wanda to lose her inhibitions.
"I appreciate the offer, though."
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 01:01 am (UTC)"Should've seen it in the old days," Marc told her. Even he realized that wasn't enough for Wanda to know what he was talking about so he said, "The - uh - walls. Between me and him. No clue I was around. It was perfect."
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 01:25 am (UTC)Here, let her take notes for when she eventually learned how to Dreamwalk into another version of herself.
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 01:37 am (UTC)Marc made a vague gesture which could have been indicating a recent passage of time or could have been him waving away an imaginary fly. "Until it broke. Then it all got fucked. Whole god damn thing down in the shitter."
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 11:32 am (UTC)Steven seemed like a nice enough guy. Didn't seem to be up to any nefarious stuff.
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 02:12 pm (UTC)Which probably spoke volumes about how little Marc knew about Wanda.
Also ignore how Marc's statement hadn't been the case since he came to Fandom. Clearly that was the anomaly.
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 02:37 pm (UTC)Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 02:56 pm (UTC)Something occurred to him. Maybe something he would have twigged to faster if he was sober but that horse was well out of the barn. "You thought I was Steven."
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 03:01 pm (UTC)Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 03:17 pm (UTC)Marc gave another one of those loose gestures he was mistakenly convinced conveyed any information. "You thought he was in a bad spot. Checked on him. That's good. We're good."
This time the gesture did manage to indicate "we" meant him and Wanda. Not that Marc thought Wanda was going to be losing any sleep over Marc's opinion of her, but right now he was saying a lot of things he normally kept to himself.
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 03:46 pm (UTC)Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 03:51 pm (UTC)Which again showed how little Marc knew about Wanda, in that of the two of them he thought it was more surprising that someone would be nice to him instead of her.
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 03:54 pm (UTC)A sad drunk, yes. But not angry.
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 04:01 pm (UTC)He shrugged to indicate he was fully aware the latter was literally the lesser of two evils.
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 04:17 pm (UTC)By killing him. And then bringing him back in a sense. And then killing him again.
Re: Talk with Marc
Date: 2022-10-04 05:40 pm (UTC)No offense meant by it being a hint. They'd only just met after all.
"Professional?" Marc asked. He gestured to himself. "Marine, mercenary, Konshu."
Not that he expected Wanda to necessarily know Konshu but he hadn't expected a bartender to know him either and turned out surprised. May as well roll the dice.
