Steven and Llewellyn had gone for a hike on Hicks Lake Loop, taking longer than the suggested time since they'd brought a picnic with them to enjoy along the way.

Once done, they headed back to their hotel room. There Steven had arranged for a fruit platter and flowers to be waiting.

Yes, their anniversary had been yesterday. But that didn't mean they were limited to celebrating on that day. After all, here they were taking the entire weekend.

"I rather enjoyed that," Steven said as they came into the room. "Our hike."

He figured Llewellyn could notice the gifts in his own time.

It had been about a month since the last time they did anything. Which Marc didn't really pay attention to since that involved both details and time. What he was aware of, though, was Passover coming ever closer.

Which had meant mocking Steven for all the extra cleaning he had to do (that's what happened when you ate in rooms besides the kitchen and the dining room, buddy), but also an awareness of the upcoming dietary restrictions.

Not that Marc planned to be out too much during the week. Him and Jewish holidays were hit or miss on if he felt like engaging. But if he did come out he would adjust his eating accordingly.

Which meant tonight was a great night for a giant freaking sandwich or something for dinner. And yeah he was vaguely aware he hadn't seen Harley in a time frame that he could at least quantify as pretty sure it was more than a week? At least?

So he'd texted, and they'd gotten on his bike, and now here they were sitting in a booth at a standard greasy spoon style diner with the menus in front of them.

"My treat," Marc told her, while still studying his menu. Hey, she'd gotten the last one with the roller derby they hadn't spent much time watching.

The weather was warm and sunny. Combine that with the cherry blossoms being at their peak and Steven and Llewellyn were not remotely the only people out and about.

Still, the crowd wasn't such that it was impossible to move. And the flowers were as beautiful as the weather had turned out to be. Llewellyn was called upon to make sure Steven didn't trip as he got distracted with taking photos, much as Steven needed to be sure Llewellyn didn't get distracted when getting near traffic.

They finally decided to stop for lunch. After some searching they were able to find a spot where they could spread their blanket out and unpack their picnic. They'd worked together, anticipating building up an appetite, and thus had chickpea salad sandwiches, potato salad, lightly pickled cucumbers, fruit skewers, and brownies. Individually Steven had made iced tea for them both, and Llewellyn had made crisps.

Once their food was placed on the blanket between them, Steven looked it over and asked, "Do you think it's enough?"

He was entirely serious.

Thursday had been spent enjoying themselves as much as possible, including the couples massage which had proven a great way to wind down after some sight seeing.

Friday... Friday was quieter.

Steven sat outside by their pool. He was dressed in his swimsuit but he was currently sitting cross legged by the edge of the pool looking into the water.

Looking at his reflection. Which was his reflection.

Which was fine. Good. What Steven was for, of course. Handling things that were too much or too painful for Marc to deal with.

Still. It wasn't as though Steven liked dealing with it either.

Steven sighed and kept looking down towards the water, not sure what to do.

Their time in Cairo had involved Steven leading Llewellyn going through every museum and site they were allowed to get into (and, thanks to Layla, a few that technically they were not). Though Steven and Llewellyn being Steven and Llewellyn meant that enjoying as much of the local food and wine as possible did not get forgotten. There were also these various handwaved details )

On Wednesday Steven and Llewellyn left Cairo for the second half of their holiday, which was to let Llewellyn soak up as much beach and sunshine as possible in Alexandria, which was thankfully having a warm spell the entire time they were there. Funny how that worked out. Ahem.

They checked in to their hotel room, at which point Llewellyn immediately changed and went outside to sun himself like a lizard in their private garden.

Steven, of course, had immediately followed to make sure Llewellyn was appropriately covered in sunscreen. Then there was the rest of the day. And the night. And, er, well... )

Which was why Steven was now curled up on one of the lounge chairs outside wearing only pajama pants and clutching the matching shirt to his chest. Fast asleep.

Steven and Llewellyn had had days to enjoy the nature around them with hiking, ice skating, and the like. Steven had taken more pictures than he could count and still felt like he hadn't captured the beauty of it.

They'd intended to do more on Wednesday. However, when they woke up they saw the predicted snow was coming down harder than anticipated. Not a blizzard by any means. But enough snow and wind that it was far more appealing to stay inside by the fire than to go out.

Of course, in a relatively small cabin nearly anything was by the fire. Which meant they could work in the area designated for the kitchen. Steven, in his case, chopping ingredients for a stew. Said stew would go well with bread Llewellyn was making.

All told, a pleasant way to spend time. Which was why Steven was humming happily under his breath while he worked.

Llewellyn had found a delicious looking restaurant for them, so Wednesday date night involved heading out for the evening.

It wasn't a formal event by any means, but Steven had still fussed over what he was wearing, ultimately settling on a nice blue button down shirt and darker blue slacks. They were as crisp as anything Steven ever wore could be, which was to say nicely ironed before he put them on and, well, here we are.

Steven put his glasses on as he sat down so he could read the menu. "Things to share, do you think?"

Marc had done some research, because apparently that was a thing he did now, and found a place on the mainland that seemed like it might not be a total waste of time. He then reached out to Harley, because that was also apparently a thing he did now, to ask if she wanted to join.

Which was why they were now pulling up in a parking lot on the motorcycle Marc was hanging on to for some reason, outside of a place that swore it had good Cuban food as well as dancing.

"Still hungry?" he asked when he turned the engine off.

It was Llewellyn's birthday, which first and foremost meant Steven was taking the day off.

Well, technically the first thing was that a bottle was left out on the kitchen counter for Llewellyn to find which simply bore a note of "M" on it.

But after that was taking the day off so that Steven and Llewellyn could portal over to Steven and Marc's (and Llewellyn's now, technically) home universe for a couple of days of celebrating.

Steven and Llewellyn had checked in to their room which was complete with a welcome snack basket, but also a bouquet of red roses, a bottle of champagne, and chocolate dipped strawberries.

They then immediately headed out to go whale watching, and were lucky enough to leave with ample sightings and pictures to remember them by.

After going to their room to wash up and change - Steven into his light linen suit, just for the occasion - they then traveled to the fairgrounds where a food truck festival was being held. It was here that there would be birthday dinner. Or at least traveling from truck to truck and probably sampling every single vegan option they could find, which turned out to be many.

"Where would you like to start?" Steven asked Llewellyn.

Llewellyn still had difficulty sleeping, which meant Marc came back home on Monday in plenty of time for Steven to be with Llewellyn at night and Steven was grateful all around for the understanding that allowed that to happen.

Of course Llewellyn's bad dreams meant poor sleep for the both of them. Which was why Steven and Llewellyn were up earlier than their usual and could look out the windows and see something was amiss.

After some investigation they were able to guess it was island nonsense yet again. At least this time they were together?

Investigation also turned up the information that there were some beautiful hiking trails nearby. Steven and Llewellyn had meant to go hiking again soon, so they decided to take advantage of it.

They put together a picnic as well as other hiking related needs such as sunscreen and bottled water, asked around and got a trail recommendation that would provide plenty of waterfalls while not being too difficult to walk, and set out.

It was possibly not too long before walking along the trail that Steven reached for Llewellyn's hand to hold i as they walked in the privacy of the shaded woods. "This seems nice?"

hasaknightjob: Marc looking in the distance (Marc looking to his left)
It wasn't that Marc had planned or anticipated or anything. It was just that there'd been some amount of time (don't ask him to specify how much, he didn't keep track of these things) and that had left him with the ability to idly ponder his options.

For instance, he could rent a bike but that required returning it in something like good condition. He could buy a bike but then he'd have to remember to take care of it.

Or he could borrow one. From someone who maybe didn't deserve nice things. Win/win, right?

Well maybe not for the guy the bike belonged to but again: didn't deserve nice things. Marc wasn't losing sleep over it.

Which was why come Tuesday evening, after running some errands (so to speak), Marc was in the parking lot by the causeway, dressed in his usual dark on dark, while leaning up against a new to him bike.

A bike which he may or may not have unconsciously gravitated towards because of the color scheme, regardless of the other reasons he'd picked it.

(The fact that it was not a Harley Davidson was, in fact, very much on purpose. Even Marc could guess she was probably sick of those jokes.)

On the back seat there was a candy apple red helmet. That one he had bought because he wasn't taking a chance on safety. If Harley did that was her business, but he wanted the option there for her if she wanted it.

No, he wasn't wearing one and didn't intend to. When you couldn't stay dead you didn't worry about these kinds of things.

Now all he needed was the person who'd said she'd meet him here.

[for the wild card, NFB due to distance]
hasaknightjob: Marc looking in the distance (Marc looking to his left)
Marc had given the heads up that this was not a dress up thing. He'd changed from earlier in the day, but only into a fresh pair of jeans, t-shirt, and a light button down over it. (Yes, he was not a guy with a lot of variety in his wardrobe. No prize for guessing if the overall outfit favored his usual dark colors too.)

He picked up Harley at her place and then they headed over to the mainland while it was still light enough the sun hadn't set yet.

Based on Harley's comments about what she was in the mood for, Marc had picked the kind of place that looked like a hole in the wall from the outside. One you could easily overlook if you didn't even know it was there. The inside wasn't too much better, with an eclectic mix of tables and chairs in various stages of torn cushions and cracked surfaces.

But as anyone knew who had experiences with these sorts of things, this was the kind of place where the worse the restaurant looked the better the food was. And sure enough even a casual glance around showed multiple generations of the same family working to seat guests, bus tables, and get the food ready while shouting back and forth at each other in a mix of Creole and English.

Even so, Marc looked at Harley to be sure. "This work?"

hasaknightjob: Steven listening (Steven listening (worried))
True to his word, once Marc had gotten Llewellyn safely back to their hotel room he'd given the body to Steven and hid nothing of what he knew about what had gone on. Llewellyn for his part hadn't felt up to talking about it, so Steven focused instead on helping Llewellyn get bundled into bed for as much rest and comfort as he needed.

Come morning Steven only got out of bed long enough to take care of room service. He ordered them some of the lovely in house teas based on their preferences from earlier in the week. For the main there was vegan waffles served with cinnamon and sugar and tofu scrambles with mushrooms. Steven also asked for a selection of fruits and pastries since those could be nibbled on during the day as needed.

When room service arrived, Steven took care of it and left it in the main area of their suite while he went to check on Llewellyn. He spoke softly when he entered the bedroom, in case Llewellyn had fallen asleep again. "Love? You awake?"

hasaknightjob: Steven awake (Steven awake)
There had been dinner, dancing, and a show the night before. Which meant there had very much been a lie in that morning. But eventually Steven and Llewellyn had felt ready to get up and enjoy more of their island holiday.

In this case it was leaving bed to... lie down again. But this time on the beach. The sun was shining, the tide was in, and the beach was spread out enough that there was something like privacy amongst all the guests. At least everyone was happy to be in their own worlds far enough away from one another that you couldn't overhear conversations or see very much at all.

It made for a nice way to get comfortable and enjoy the day. Steven of course making sure Llewellyn was slathered with plenty of sunscreen to make sure he didn't burn with all the sunshine he was soaking up. But otherwise Steven himself was currently reading a book in the shade of their large umbrella and listening to the sound of the waves.

Unless of course his beau felt like interrupting him. Steven had no objection to that.

hasaknightjob: Steven casual wear (Steven casual wear)
It had been a quiet morning, which Steven had appreciated. Late lie in. Room service breakfast that was so late it was almost lunch. Nothing on the schedule which required them to be anywhere.

Which was good. Because it meant that Steven wasn't currently ruining any plans. If anything, it was ideal. Being home would have meant being around people he knew and spending the day keenly aware he'd need to get himself together enough to go to work tomorrow. Being on the trip with everyone would have meant having to retreat so as not to ruin everyone else's fun time.

Here it was just him and Llewellyn in a private place where they didn't need to worry about anything but themselves.

Of course that just was a little hard. Steven wouldn't have minded having Marc about. And he could be, Steven knew, if he asked. Marc wouldn't deny him that. But by the same token Steven wouldn't ask. He knew Marc needed to be as far away from things as possible today, so Steven wouldn't reach for him unless it was an emergency.

Instead Steven was now sitting on the edge of the pool outside of their room, dressed in a swimsuit and sunglasses, and letting his feet dangle into the water. Just... thinking.

There had been Valentine's Day acknowledgements during the, well, daytime. For example, Steven's gift to Llewellyn had been delivered to their home around lunchtime.

(What? Steven knew his beau preferred food to flowers.)

But when evening came it was time to dress and head for dinner. Steven put on his nice blue suit for the occasion. Which perhaps wasn't the best choice of outfit for the later activity of ice skating, but Steven wanted to look nice all the same.

Dinner was first, however. As Steven had picked what they would do, Llewellyn had choice of what they would eat. So it was dinner and dessert at their favorite Greek restaurant.

And looking at one's beau rather besmittenly in the candlelight. Or at least that's what Steven was doing a great deal of. The beau would have to establish for himself what he would prefer to do while they waited for their dessert to arrive.

Steven and Llewellyn had made plans to dress up and dress up they did. For a factor of "dressing up" which meant the two of them were wearing suits. Not an unusual circumstance for Llewellyn. Slightly unusual for Steven as he tended to do it only on special occasions. But what was a romantic date if not a special occasion?

Steven for his part was in a dark blue suit with the tie and pocket square Llewellyn had given him. Given the events of the day, he had also brought a large umbrella to help protect the both of them from any errant snowflakes that might try to stain them or their clothing before they made it to the causeway. The results were pretty, no question, but the two of them only had so many suits between them and no point risking the chance the stains wouldn't be gone in the morning.

Anyway, as a Brit of course Steven had a good umbrella, so might as well use it. It now looked like a Jackson Pollock painting but that was pretty in its own way! Bonus, really.

As such there was no issue with them arriving in time for their reservation and getting seated in a booth so that they could enjoy their meal with a certain amount of privacy. Though Steven did stash the umbrella under the table and hoped very hard that any melting snow wasn't going to stain the restaurant's nice carpet.

"Specials sounded good," Steven said, even as he got his glasses on to peruse the menu. "I was thinking the tortellini, maybe?"

Not even tiny horses of undetermined domesticated nature could keep Steven and Llewellyn from heading to dinner on the mainland. Steven had read about an Italian restaurant which had opened and had a fair number of vegan options even if it wasn't vegan specific.

He and Llewellyn were now seated at a table in said restaurant, waiting for their first course to arrive. Steven, for his part, seemed to be looking around at the decor - very nice, sort of mimicking the feeling of being in someone's homey dining room - but someone who knew him well could probably tell he was distracted.

Luckily he was eating with someone who knew him well.

Their second day in Lima had been spent touring a winery, which meant that Llewellyn got to be in his element and Steven got to enjoy watching his beau be in his element. Which wasn't to say that Steven didn't take in the tour and try to learn things along the way. But there was still pleasure in watching his beau do something that made him happy.

After a winery there was perhaps a slight extra need for a quiet morning in. But by Saturday evening they were more than ready for the next thing on their itinerary, which was the magic water circuit.

They got there as the sun was setting, which meant enough time to see the water features in the light of day but more than enough time to see them fully lit up and on display.

Luckily the weather was pleasant enough that it was no problem being outdoors and taking loads of photos. Perhaps unluckily Steven did get taken up by his desire to take photos and thus sometimes was in risk of getting too close to some of the fountains. But surely he'd notice that before stepping directly into a stream of water, right?

...right??

The previous day's trip to Macchu Piccu had been amazing. Possibly equally amazing was that Steven had eventually been convinced to leave. After attempting to get into every possible corner, museum, display, nook and cranny, and more all the while becoming more and more existed as he got to see the architectural features in person, it had been a near thing.

Luckily there were things which could compete for his attention. One was a comfortable hotel room with his beau. Another was spending their last night in Cusco at a planetarium as well as having a nice dinner. It was a good final stop before they departed on Thursday for their hotel in Lima and the other thing which could get Steven's attention which was, of course, another pyramid. (This one, not that one).

Put first: the planetarium. During which Steven had been enraptured by the presentation on Inca astronomy, and thrilled by looking up at the stars, and now he was loading up on items at the gift shop. Particularly things which involved the Llama Cósmica o Qatachillay because they went so nicely with the pictures of him and Llewellyn with an alpaca that they'd taken earlier in the week (one of which was now Steven's new mobile wallpaper).

Did this mean Steven's hands were currently overflowing with books, t-shirts, bags, and hats? Yes. Should he try to get a basket to carry them to make check out easier? Probably also yes. How did his beau feel about all this? That was for the beau himself to say.
